It is a biological fact that water is a basic component of life. Earth’s oceans, lakes, rivers and streams testify to that. Our physical bodies also are largely made up of water. If you’ve ever found yourself in a hospital ER you know that one of the first things done is to start an IV and hydrate you. Promoters of good health encourage the drinking of 6-8 glasses of pure water daily.
If you’ve worked outside in the sun or been in the West or Southwest much you have knowledge of what real thirst is. Thirst is good because it drives us to give our body what it needs. Thirst can also drive us to drink water we later regret. I recall an elk hunt near Meeker, CO with CBA co-founder, Fred Sprague. During the latter part of our hunt we made our way to the Cathedral Canyon area as we were told that it contained a big herd of elk. After backpacking in and setting up a very primitive camp, the thirst-scouting and learning began. Earlier on our hunt Fred ran short of canteen water and decided to fill up in a beautiful, clear little stream. By the time we got to the canyon, giardia (a microscopic parasite) took its toll on Fred and made for a less than enjoyable few days. We did get into elk and they also taught us valuable lessons.
Likewise, there is a spiritual thirst in our lives that needs to be satisfied. Jesus said, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.” Rev. 21:6
Thirst is an ongoing life need whether physical or spiritual. The question is are you thirsty for the temporal things of self and sin or will you satisfy your spiritual thirst with Jesus’ offer? In Romans 6:23 we learn, “The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Ephesians 2:8-9 says, “For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.” The eternal God, through the death, burial and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ, will quench our spiritual thirst. But we must choose to drink of that water of eternal life He gives.
Believe it or not, there are better things than a successful bow hunt – our dream hunt of a lifetime. I like what the Apostle Paul reveals in I Corinthians 2:9, “Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love Him.”
So, it’s time to get our sights on the eternal because the best is still ahead for those who accept Jesus’ offer. Just as the planning and preparation for an extended hunt is important so is our preparation for the eternal. Genesis 2:7 tells us that were created to live forever. Jesus said to the Samaritan woman at the well, “Whosoever drinks of this water shall thirst again: but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.” John 4:13b, 14
I am so grateful that my thirst has been satisfied in Jesus Christ. What about you?
